4k screen resolution problems - protools 12, air music tech

Hello :) I hope someone can help!!
i am having a problem with pro tools 12 and the default air music programs that come with it.

Whenever I open up xpand or any of the other programs my screen resolution quarters in size and basically makes pro tools un-useable.

The only way to make the program normal again is to shut down and relaunch pro tools. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? This is so frustrating :(

All of my native instrument programs work but i really want to get these programs work too :(

kind regards

  • Hi Charlie,

Thanks for posting. At this moment, our plugins are not optimized for 4K resolution. However, I'll be happy to submit this as a feature request for you. Please stay tuned to www.airmusictech.com for all future updates and announcements, or consider singing up for our newsletter.

  • Has there been any progress on this? I am having the same issue; the Air plugins bundled with Pro Tools do not work in 4K and cause display scaling problems that render the entire DAW useless until restarted.

  • I am having this same problem... at least now I know it's because of the AIR plug ins so I guess I can't use those any more lol. All my old sessions were small and I thought it was because it was an older version of protools session but I guess not. Restarting protools without the plug in seems to work so I guess I will have to use some binoculars to remove the plus from my old sessions then restart protools in order to work with them smh.

  • I’m Angry and Frustrated
I am having the same issue and just went through a long drawn out conversation with AVID about it.

It is ridiculous to suggest that the AIR plugins are 'not optimised' for 4k. What that translates to is we couldn't be fussed to check the code in testing to make sure it picks up the screen resolution properly.

It's not a hard fix, please prioritise this and get a patch out asap.

I am at the point of returning £1000 of Pro Tools bundle because this issue makes the software unusable as is.
    • I finally just gave up on these plug ins smh lol but a few weeks ago when I upgraded to the new version of Protools it scaled down as soon as I opened it. So I hit up avid and they responded less than 24hrs. Here's what I had to do...

      1. I had to right click on the pro tools icon, then go to properties.
      2. Next I clicked the "compatibility" tab
      3. Then under settings check the box that says "override high DPI scaling behavior"
      4. On the drop down under that I put "system"

Not only did it fix my pro tools scaling problem it also stopped the AIR plug ins from causing it to scale down too.
    • I am using "override DPI scaling" (by application) for Reaper (otherwise a WIndows upsscaling of 120% blurs the UI", which causes no problems expecpt for Loom II. The UI is completely scrapped with that setting. The size is ok, but the position of the elements is screwed up, so the synth becomes unusable.

  • Extremely annoying... I like using the stereo width plug in. Used it yesterday and had to scale my screen down to 1080 to continue mixing smh... my eyes had to adjust lol. I will probably just get that type of plug from another company since that's all I use. I use to use chorus and distortion a lot too :-/

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled 4K/Scaling Pro Tools AIR plugin glitch makes everything TINY grrrr.

I have a 4K monitor, whenever I load an AIR plugin my entire DAW will stop scaling and go really tiny, making it very difficult to use. I use 150% scaling for all programs for my 31 inch screen and whenevr I load an AIR plugin it over rides the scaling for the entire DAW. The only fix I know is using a different resolution and stop using scaling, but I want a REAL fix. Anyone got any advice?
Look at this photo. Its tiny. Absolutely unusable, compared to another website in the second window for size reference on my screen. I have PT 12.7
I'm trying to do an update with the avid application manager but I have no idea how.
It says my upgrade/support plan expired earlier this year, but it says on the AVID website Im entitled to updates forever?
These were the default air plugins included in pro tools so I really want them to work

  • It's been a full FIVE DAYS and still no response from AIR. Avid responded and said that they no longer own AIR and it is entirely AIR's responsibility.
I paid for the instruments bundle as It was included as a part of the standard pro tools license. I expect everything to work. This topic is over a year old and there has been no solution. I am actually insulted my own thread got merged into it. This is a current issue for me and I need it addressed. Everyone in this thread is getting ignored.

  • I’m okayish
Just spent time and money to upgrade to the latest packages only to be confronted with this problem. Fixing this is not a "feature request", it is an urgent requirement to address a serious bug.

    There is, however, a workaround:
Select the "Properties" dialog from the context menu for ProTools within Windows.
    Select the "Compatibility" tab.
Select "Override high DPI scaling behavior. Scaling performed by:
    "System (Enhanced)"

I am not sure as yet what impact this has on ProTools itself.

    • Found the hard way - don't use "System (Enhanced)" as above, just use "System".
    • Using "override high DPI scaling behavior" has a serious problem.
When set to "System", the immediate problem of scaling is fixed, but another more serious problem is introduced. The problem manifests in ProTools stalling and becoming unresponsive for up to a minute. During this time, you can see an incorrect DPI fuzziness and the spinning wheel of waiting appears. This happens several times per hour and renders ProTools unusable in production.
Once the DPI setting has been set to System, the problem occurs whether or not you are using an AIR plugin.
Air plugins cannot be used at 4K.

    • It would be great if you (and others) could confirm this. I have been running ProTools now for two days with DPI scaling off and everything is running smoothly. I was very worried when the stalling appeared as I had just spent many thousands on a new Xeon 3GHz system (of course with 4K monitor). Fortunately, I had been running without problems for several days prior to switching DPI scaling on, so was able to link the two.
    • Mine seems to be working fine... I opened AIR Width and didn't have a problem.
